The discussion is multifaceted focusing on the agency of the young people themselves as well as on how relationships within their local community can have a role in replacing their previous identification as gang members. It explores what is meant by a youth gang, why some young people stop identifying with the youth gang and argues that the local community and broader society have a role in providing social recognition and identity-enhancement opportunities for these young people.}, doi = {10.1177/1473225414549679}, eissn = {1747-6283}, issn = {1473-2254}, issue = {2}, journal = {Youth justice}, pages = {148-165}, publicationstatus = {Published}, publisher = {SAGE Publications}, url = {https://hull-repository.worktribe.com/output/381462}, volume = {15}, keyword = {Youth gangs, Desistance, Social recognition, Identity-enhancement, Community engagement}, year = {2015}, author = {Gormally, Sinead} }
