Jo Byrne

Wilson Family Research Fellow in Maritime History

Biography Jo has a background in historical research, research administration and cultural sector practice. She is an enthusiastic interdisciplinary researcher working at the interface of maritime history, cultural geography and cultural curatorship. As a maritime historian, research interests include fisheries history, late twentieth-century maritime transitions and port-city cultures. Other research themes include oral history, place memory, lived experience of place and community heritage.

In addition to her academic career, Jo has over 20 years’ experience as a cultural sector manager, primarily in the fields of the historic and built environment. She has worked in the areas of project and grant management, policy development and service delivery, located within the public, third and HE sectors. Most recently, she was the research manager for the University of Hull’s evaluation of the outcomes and processes of Hull UK City of Culture 2017.
