Dr Peter Rowley

Research Interests

An experimental and field volcanologist, whose research is themed around volcanic flow modelling, and deformation processes around volcanoes. Current work focuses on the behaviour of pyroclastic density currents, and mixing processes in debris flows and dense granular flows. Pete also has experience working in experimental rock mechanics, in particular looking at volcanic edifice stability, and volcanoseismic generation processes.

In addition to these core areas, Pete has worked on submarine turbidity current modelling, debris avalanche behaviour, and basin reconstruction. He has extensive experimental and data analysis experience in experimental flume modelling, X-Ray CT of rock structures, high pressure rock deformation and characterisation, and soil mechanics.

Biography After several years teaching GCSE and A Level Chemistry, Pete completed his PhD at Royal Holloway University of London, exploring the behaviour of pyroclastic density currents using flume experiments. Following this he worked in collaboration with Midland Valley Exploration Ltd to test and develop a method to use basin-scale sediment modelling to provide better hydrocarbon exploration information.

Pete was then awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans in France, enabling him to develop new techniques to explore the behaviour of highly mobile gas-fluidised pyroclastic density currents.

Following this he worked within the Rock Mechanics Laboratory at the University of Portsmouth, providing consultancy and testing to the geotechnical and mining industries, whilst also setting up a dedicated Geohazards Laboratory.
