Abstract

The introduction discusses the county boundary; places mentioned in other counties; the Hundreds, their reconstruction, composition, boundaries, later history, and revised name-forms; related or 'satellite' texts, Bath A and Bath B and the "Liber Exoniensis" (Exon); additional information in Exon; its relationship with Great Domesday; formulae in Domesday and Exon; the "Victoria County History" translation; the Tax Returns; the state of the manuscript for the county; the identification of places; the editorial history of earlier versions of the notes, and the current state of the revision. Some material in this introduction derives from the original printed edition published by Phillimore (1980) and edited by Caroline and Frank Thorn.
