Abstract

This article gives an overview of the journey of four paramedic advanced practitioners working towards a non-medical prescribing qualification. The legislation was changed in April 2018 to allow advanced paramedics to undertake a suitable validated higher education non-medical prescribing programme and on successful completion to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as a prescriber. The background to the legislation change, the role of advanced paramedics in three different clinical settings and the advantages that prescribing will bring for patient care in these settings will be discussed. The barriers to working effectively as an advanced clinical practitioner aligned to legislation regarding controlled drugs and unlicensed medication are highlighted.
