Abstract

On the 9th of November 1918, the German Chancellor, Max Prince of Baden, announced the twofold abdication of Wilhelm II, as German Emperor and as King of Prussia. Nearly thirty years later, and two years after World War II had ended, the Allied Control Council officially dissolved the state of Prussia. Promulgated on 25th February 1947, Control Council Law No 46 argued that Prussia had always been “a bearer of militarism and reaction in Germany”. The decades between the end of the Prussian monarchy, and the definitive end of Prussian statehood, can be characterised as the “Twilight of Prussia”, a period in which the largest German state by far was at first reconstituted politically, but incrementally hollowed out after 1932. Even more than other German states, Prussia was confronted with the challenge of how to cope with the end of monarchy, which kept a prominent presence in cultural life as well as political conflicts. Today, Prussia remains an important part of German history, and we are challenged to deal with its heritage on several levels, ranging from the Prussian state and the former ruling house, to what has often been called the “idea of Prussia”, the ideals and values epitomised by the Hohenzollerns’ state, the trials and tribulations, the indulgence and despotism of the rulers, the architectural and artistic remains of the state. Many of these points were already raised soon after the 1918 revolution both in the scholarly community and amongst the wider public (either belligerently or conciliatorily), and this volume seeks to provide substantiated contributions that open up new perspectives for future analysis.
