Abstract

Despite calls for increased investment in nursing, there is a global shortfall of 9 million nurses and midwives needed to deliver and sustain universal health coverage. The Nursing Now campaign run in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the International Council of Nurses has the laudable aim of raising the status and profile of nursing worldwide. However, nursing and midwifery are essentially female‐dominated professions and men in most parts of the world comprise around 10% of the nursing workforce. If nursing is to truly reflect the makeup of the general population and be more inclusive and diversified it needs to attract more men. Efforts to address this include recruitment drives, positive rebranding of nursing as gender‐neutral, pre‐school education and outreach initiatives, and unconscious bias training. However, there is an urgent need to address the under‐representation of men in nursing and explore the impact of a more gender balanced workforce.
