Abstract

Three of the articles in this special issue (Covo, Forestier and Mandelblatt) were presented at a workshop devoted to the political economy of the French Caribbean and the French Atlantic, held at the University of Warwick on 30 November 2009. Thanks are due to the Yesu Persaud Centre for Caribbean Studies of the University of Warwick, which funded this workshop; to the Early European American Studies Association, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, which provided necessary support for foreign travel to this workshop; and to the Institute of Advanced Studies, University of Warwick, which provided a venue and catering for this event. Richard Drayton, Kings' College, London made valuable comments on the papers and the theme at this workshop. Two of the articles (Gervais and Potofsky) were delivered first at the April 2010 EEASA (AHRC Network Grant) - LARCA (Universite Paris-Diderot) Conference on Atlantic commerce and Revolution. Research for these articles were funded by the MARPROF program, funded by ANR; as well as by the research laboratory LARCA of the Université Paris-Diderot Paris-7, and research funds through Université Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint Denis. © The Author 2011.
