Abstract

A study of the degree of spirituality and religious practice exhibited by the mid-thirteenth century poet and novelist, Philippe de Remy (d.c. 1263), particularly looking at his poetry and his romance, La Manekine (c. 1239).  It examines the orthodoxy of his Marian devotions in relation to contemporary poetry of Gautier de Coincy, and his devotional practice when compared with contemporary royal courts and that of other statesmen.  It challenges the view that aristocratic devotional practice was divorced from the mainstream, and discovers the surprising extent of liturgical knowledge and devotional reading of this thirteenth-century Capetian civil servant.
