Abstract
Authenticity is a key preoccupation for the French popular music genre, chanson, and the figures of Brassens, Brel and Ferré are the paradigmatic 'big three' of the genre. This chapter analyses the place of performance within chanson. It takes these three singer-songwriters as case studies, to examine the extent to which the authenticity of chanson is performed, codified and disseminated by the singer-songwriters when on stage.
