Abstract
The mathematical formulation of the models of the air-breathing polymer-electrolyte-membrane (PEM) fuel cells is similar to that of the conventional PEM fuel cells. The only difference between the two formulations lies in how the boundary conditions at the cathode side are treated. The literature review shows that there exist a limited number of models of air-breathing PEM fuel cells. This is attributed to the fact that, compared with the conventional PEM fuel cells, the use of air-breathing PEM fuel cells is mainly limited to small portable applications. The main focus of most of the models of the air-breathing PEM fuel cell is to optimize the design of the open cathode in order to improve heat and mass exchange between the fuel cell and the ambient and consequently improve the fuel cell performance.
