Abstract
The introduction discusses the history of the county; the county boundary; the Hundreds, their boundaries, origin, lordship, history, and revised name-forms; the administration of the county; its ecclesiastical organisation; related or 'satellite' texts; the "Liber Exoniensis" (Exon); the Tax Returns; entries in the 'satellite' texts; writing and correction; the state of the manuscript for the county; boroughs and castles; and the identification of places; the editorial history of earlier versions of the notes, and the current state of the revision. Some material in this introduction derives from the original printed edition published by Phillimore (1979) and edited by Caroline and Frank Thorn.
