Abstract

Frozen’s release in 2013 began a period of unprecedented popular and commercial success for an animated feature; several years after its cinematic release, Frozen remains a merchandizing and entertainment phenomenon. Additionally, it has spawned multiple short films and, in late 2019, a sequel. A recurring subject of discussion regarding Frozen is its emphasis on “sisterly” love as an important—if not the ultimate—form of true love celebrated by the films. Is this reading accurate? This chapter examines the evidence for these claims interrogates what kinds of love play what roles in the lives of Frozen’s characters, and presents a feminist analysis of the main characters, Anna and Elsa.
