Abstract
Introduction:
The transition into academia presents significant challenges, particularly for those whom it is a secondary career (Herman et al., 2021). While clinical settings typically provide induction and preceptorship packages, Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) often lack comparable comprehensive support structures.
This study focuses on academics who recently entered HEI after a career in healthcare, examining their experiences with induction and support. These academics are unique in that academia is a secondary occupation (Hunter 2018), having gained expertise in their respective fields before choosing a new path and essentially becoming novices (Benner 1984). This study examines whether HEIs provide robust induction processes for these academics, taking into account their expertise and the need to navigate the complexities of a new academic environment. Despite their prior accomplishments, these academics may need tailored support as they embark on their HEI journey (Hunter & Haytor 2019).
