Abstract

The aim of this article is to investigate how changes within the Italian prison population have affected the prison living conditions. Without doubt, the chronic overcrowding which characterizes the Italian prison system, combined with a lack of stable financing and adequate resources deployment, have seriously affected prisoners' well-being. investigating the Italian case, the article analyses the role of solidarity and prisoner's bonds in coping with deprivation. After a brief description of changes in the composition of the prison population, the article explores, mixing data collected through biographical interviews and ethnographic observation, prison's life conditions. The attention is on relational aspects linked to the lack of material resources. The aim of the article is to stress the relation between material and social capital in imprisonment.
