Project Description

Jigawa State, Nigeria has some of the worst human development outcomes for women and children globally. High fertility and low uptake of reproductive and maternal health services are significant challenges to reducing maternal morbidity and mortality. To address this, we aim to co-develop with stakeholders a health improving/promotion intervention involving peer-to-peer learning for adolescents in after-school health clubs. Our proposed Pump-Priming activities build on earlier engagement work with stakeholders in Jigawa and include: secondary analysis of Nigerian survey data; a pilot study to inform development of the planned intervention and refine study processes ahead of a larger scale study; and a symposium in Kano to facilitate networking, engagement with key international players (e.g. WHO) and grow a sustainable research community in Nigeria. This proposal draws on expertise of an interdisciplinary group of academics, researchers and community-based workers in the UK and in Nigeria (Bayero University, Kano and FAYOHI, Jigawa State).
