A performance of the play 'Shylock' by Gareth Armstrong with accompanying Q&A and workshop
Mar 1, 2025

Description The project centres on a performance of the play ‘Shylock’. This acclaimed one-man show, written and performed by Hull alumnus Gareth Armstrong, and directed by Frank Barrie, explores the figure of Shylock in and beyond Shakespeare’s ‘The Merchant of Venice’. Powerful and timely, it gives a unique perspective on how Shakespeare’s play engages with myths of Jewishness current in Shakespeare’s time, on its performance history, and on how it has resonated in subsequent eras. The performance will be followed by a Q&A with Armstrong and a one-hour interactive workshop for students entitled ‘A Wilderness of Monkeys’.
