Abstract

This article is the first to re-read Helen Monteagle as a contribution to understandings of the variety of prose fiction published in the Romantic period. Its circulation in print coincided with that of Frankenstein and Northanger Abbey, and its disappearance is typical of the many novels produced by a generation of writers who did not achieve the distinction of Shelley or Austen.
