Abstract
The book describes the transformation in aristocrats' expectations, conduct, piety and status;the aristocracy'sexpressions of social domination, and their relationship with the monarchy. It synchronises for the first time English with Continental scholarship, and eschews traditional models of feudal and bastard feudal societies.
