Chivalry and courtliness: colliding constructs

Crouch, David

Authors

David Crouch

Abstract

The explanation of noble conduct in the middle ages has become focussed on two themes, the code of chivalry and the constructed habitus of courtliness. This chapter reviews the historiography and validity of the concepts and suggests that the imprecise epistemology ofhistorians isleading to unnecessary confusion.
