Abstract

Subordinates and other colleagues are unlikely to offer their positive or negative feedback unless they are asked explicitly to provide a genuine assessment of the leader's performance.7 It is imperative that leaders foster a safe environment where people around them are not afraid to give their honest opinions. According to Thorman, leaders should be proactive about understanding their roles and proactively seek to improve.12 * Negative feedback also can be viewed as an opportunity for bonding with colleagues. Leaders are not expected to know everything; so asking a colleague to serve as a mentor can lead to tremendous results.13 * Self-reflection is the logical outcome of negative feedback, and it can be used to improve behaviors and attitudes. * The way leaders handle negative feedback lets them demonstrate an openness to change and growth, showing their colleagues that they are mature, cooperative, and able to embrace change. * Finally, leaders should remember that candid feedback reflects people's willingness to help them improve.
