Abstract
Pilot tests specifically to derisk full scale deployment of amine post-combustion capture plants are becoming of interest as plans for further commercial projects are being developed in the UK and elsewhere. Experience with problems in full-scale deployment of post-combustion capture using amines to date and ongoing studies suggests that a number of risks to successful project completion could be mitigated by suitable pilot tests. Possible test unit concepts at ~10 tCO2/day and ~100 kgCO2/day scale are described, together with proposed test programme objectives and requirements. In all cases ‘boring’ test programmes lasting a year or more will be needed to verify trends that might not appear until similar, or longer, periods have elapsed on full scale plants in commercial service. Pilot tests prior to deployment are recommended in the UK and it appears that the temporary installation of units to do this will be facilitated by regulators.
