Abstract

A patient-specific finite element model of the spine is currently beingdeveloped to aid the surgeon in the diagnosis and clinical managementof spinal conditions1. To validate the application of the computermodel, a laboratory validation spine is beingdeveloped . This paperdeals with the development and basic characteristics of the intervertebraldisc component of the spine since it is the most criticalelement and its accurate performance is essential if the validation spineis to function correctly.
