Writing remoteness: Language and place-making at Spurn

Abstract

What makes a ‘remote place’ remote? Using the example of Spurn on the Holderness coast, this flash talk will contend that ‘remoteness’ is a concept produced by the discursive juxtaposition of closeness and distance, the ‘here’ and ‘there’, both in spatial and in temporal terms. With examples from literary representations of Spurn as well as non-fiction informative blogs from the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, this talk will demonstrate how language can be employed to produce a certain narrative for a place such as Spurn, which might have implications for its management in the future.
