Abstract

Clinical mentorship is a complex procedure underpinned by a variety of literature derived from philosophy, psychology and humanist theory, such as Maslow's hierachy of needs (1943). Further contemporary practice demands that practitioners meet national competency levels in order to undertake the role of clinical mentor, as guided by the documentation of professional bodies (Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), 2008a; College of Operating Department Practitioners (CODP), 2009). With the heightened focus on patient experience since the publication of the Mid Staffordshire Report (Francis, 2013), it is imperative that practitioners use the evidence for producing a conducive, but safe, learning environment in order to mentor and cultivate the registered workforce of tomorrow.
