Discussion: Why should midwives consider postnatal depression in fathers?

Abstract

Historically it is maternal mental health which is prioritised throughout pregnancy and the postpartum, with recognition by midwives and other professionals that conditions such as postnatal depression (PND) can impact on women’s experiences of new motherhood, their bond with their baby and partner, and their overall wellbeing. Consequently, fathers have often been viewed as the secondary parent or supporter. Yet, emerging research highlights the transition to fatherhood as a time of vulnerability for fathers’ own mental health, but where fathers receive little or no support. There is an opportunity for midwives to support fathers, who may also suffer postnatal depression.
