Abstract

The lecture explores the current challenges in the education sector in relation to children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including those with mental ill-health. It will chart some of the historical developments in the field and identify the particular challenges that are currently being experienced by schools, colleges and universities. I will argue that the emphasis on individualised approaches, which locate the problems squarely within individuals, are insufficient because they do not target the underlying causes, but instead seek to address the symptoms. I will emphasise the need for a systemic approach which addresses the risk factors that are prevalent within schools, families, communities and policy. I wil argue that greater attention needs to be given to educational and life transitions and that a political response is required to advance educational inclusion.
