Abstract

This chapter identifies and discusses the central and supporting concepts that seem to have participated in the construction of the concept of unitary psychosis. It proposes that concepts can be organized in terms of a simplified three-strata model that includes (1) a bottom-layer whose nature is mostly organic and includes causality generators; (2) a middle-layer whose nature in the past was considered as “functional” but which now can be redefined as a sort of translator or compiler, able to transfer information from the bottom layer to the top layer; and (3) a top or surface layer that contains the expressive forms and mechanisms required to communicate the signs and symptoms of disease.
