Abstract

This chapter explores the (de)construction of reality within contemporary metal music production, focusing on doom metal and metalcore. These subgenres demonstrate varied production approaches, influencing how production relates to the compositional language of metal music. The chapter examines the presentation of space through instrument placement and how drum kit and guitar production inform performative and compositional strategies. It contrasts metalcore’s use of hyperreal production to achieve precise and articulate sounds with doom metal’s nostalgic methods that emphasize performance atmosphere and real-space recording. By analyzing these contrasting approaches, the chapter highlights the evolving relationship between technology, production, and composition in metal music.
