Abstract

2015 marks the bi-centenary of the beginning of the excavations on the Iron Age cemetery at Arras near Market Weighton, East Yorkshire, which gave its name to the Arras Culture. Here the first chariot burials in the UK were discovered, containing iron items such as tyres and other fittings. This contribution reviews iron production, consumption and deposition in Eastern Yorkshire in the light of recent discoveries elsewhere in Britain and beyond emphasising the importance of a whole landscape approach.
