Dr Franklin Onukwugha

Biography Franklin Onukwugha is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Clinical and Applied Health Research (ICAHR), and the lead coordinator for the Hull Global Health Research Network (GHRN) which aims to develop interdisciplinary research projects addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He is currently the project manager for the NIHR funded project on alcohol harm prevention in pregnancy-CHAMPION.
Franklin was a Co-Investigator in a QR-GCRF funded Global Health Project involving Adolescent Reproductive Health in Nigeria in partnership with the International Network for Advancing Science and Policy (INASP) based in Oxford, and a Research Associate in a community-based mHealth project in western Kenya in collaboration with the Tropical Institute of Community Health and Development (TICH) in Kenya.
He is also an external examiner, and an Associate Lecturer at the University of Sunderland in London, where he teaches and supervises both undergraduate (Health and Social Care) and postgraduate (MSc Public Health) students. Prior to joining the University, Franklin was a lecturer at Coventry University Scarborough, UK College of Business and Computing and a module leader at St-Patrick’s International College London.
Franklin is an experienced mixed methods researcher with expertise in statistical modelling of population-level data, quantitative/qualitative secondary data analysis, and systematic reviews. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health (FRSPH), and a member of several Professional Associations such as the British Society for Population Studies (BSPS), and the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP). He has also received several prestigious awards/fellowships including the Commonwealth Early Career Academic Grants and the Population Reference Bureau Policy Communication Fellowship sponsored by USAID in partnership with the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP).
Research Interests Franklin is interested in Global Health research with a specific focus on adolescent sexual/reproductive health, maternal/child health and HIV/AIDS, and the interface between research, policy and practice. As a PRB Policy Communication fellow, he is passionate about bridging research to policy gap in low- and mid-income countries.
