Project Title | “Freedom is a constant struggle”: Women’s journeys after modern slavery in the United Kingdom. |
Project Description | This PhD thesis examined the journeys of women who had escaped modern slavery and human trafficking (MSHT) and were rebuilding their lives in the UK. Using critical methodologies and narrative analysis, it highlighted the voices of survivors, collected through semi-structured interviews with both the women and the practitioners who supported them. The research traced their experiences across three stages: Liberation, navigating support systems, and transitioning into independent living. It revealed that, despite ongoing challenges, the women played pivotal agentic roles in their journeys, developing strategies to navigate systemic barriers in their everyday lives. A key finding was that existing support systems often created additional obstacles, exacerbating their struggles. The thesis ultimately called for systemic changes to ensure lasting freedom and meaningful support for survivors. |
