Project Title A qualitative exploration of academic’s experience with lecture recording
Project Description Lecture capture is widely used in Higher Education to record lectures for students to view online at a time of their choosing. Many previous studies focus on student perceptions of lecture capture, attendance and attainment. There are few qualitative studies pertaining to academic experiences and perceptions of lecture capture.

The purpose of this study was to bridge this gap and understand how lecture capture was being used in a specific faculty within a Higher Education Institution. A qualitative approach was taken in order to generate rich data with thematic analysis used to interpret the data.
The key themes which were identified pertain to the benefits and negatives of academics’ experience with lecture capture. Evaluation of the data revealed that academics find it hard to differentiate between advantages and disadvantages for students and themselves.
The advantages for academics in using lecture capture identified include; time efficiencies when using live lecture capture, peer review and self-evaluation, positive changes to academic practice, creation of additional supplementary materials, positive student feedback and a recognition that lecture capture supports students with an SPLD.
The disadvantages and challenges pertain mainly to technical issues around software and hardware with academics expressing concern about the potential impact on the student experience.

Opportunities for development identify innovative concepts which involve using lecture capture for supplementary materials which link in with wider, HE and institutional strategies on student satisfaction, improving retention and continuation, increasing attainment and developing an inclusive curriculum.

The findings have implications for policy and practice around the use of lecture capture with recommendations for improvement presented and future research opportunities outlined.
