Project Title | The Dynamics of Contemporary Slavery and Conflict: Agency, Asylum and Accountability |
Project Description | This research considers the nexus between conflict and contemporary slavery to assess the conflict-specific vulnerabilities that put people at risk of 'modern slavery'. The research uses the Bellagio-Harvard Guidelines definition of slavery in tandem with a broad definition of conflict as a set of conditions whereby parties identify and act on mutually incompatible goals. It finds that conflict increases the risk of 'modern slavery' by reducing people's agency and impacting negatively on their support networks, thereby forcing people to choose between options that all hold inherent risk. |
