Professor Glenn Burgess
| Biography | Glenn Burgess is Professor of Early Modern History. He served as the University's Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) from May 2014 to August 2019, having previously held the role of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching) since February 2010. He has been a member of the history Department since 1994. He was born in New Zealand, and educated there (Victoria University of Wellington), as well as at the University of Cambridge, where he completed a PhD in 1988. Professor Burgess returned to New Zealand to teach at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch from 1988 to 1994, when he joined the History School at Hull. He was awarded a personal chair in 1998. He served as Head of Department of History from 2003 to 2009 and has also served as Deputy Dean for Research in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He has been a member of Senate since 2001. Professor Burgess's research interests have mostly been in the history of Tudor and Stuart England, the history of political thought, and philosophy and theory of history. His current work, though, is on the political thought of George Orwell , and on the theory and history of free speech and academic freedom. His major publications include The Politics of the Ancient Constitution: An Introduction to English Political Thought 1603-1642 (1992); Absolute Monarchy and the Stuart Constitution (1996); British Political Thought 1500-1660: The Politics of the Post-Reformation (2009); and, as editor, The New British History: Founding a Modern State 1603-1715 (1999); English Radicalism, 1550-1850 (2007), and European Political Thought 1450-1700 (2009). Professor Burgess is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. |
