Biography Professor Rotchell's research focuses on the biological effects of environmental contaminants at the molecular level, known as molecular ecotoxicology.

Recent interests have focused on microplastic analyses in different samples, including water and mussels from the environment and supermarket shelves, to microplastics in different types of foodstuffs/beverages, to microplastics in the air within people's homes as well as outdoors, and also in human tissue samples.

Currently funded projects include cancer in fish, endocrine disruption and photoperiod in bivalves, inland waterways sediment characterisation of EU Watch List chemicals, and pharmaceuticals in the Humber Estuary.
Research Interests Environmental Toxicology

Genotoxicology

Endocrine Disruption in Bivalves

Microplastics in Different Media (Organisms - including humans, Water, Sediments, Air, and Food)

Prof Rotchell led the EU North Sea Region Interreg project Sullied Sediments.

She works with many external collaborators at other universities worldwide as well as regulatory authorities, and local government colleagues.
Teaching and Learning Prof Rotchell currently teaches the Final Year module in Ecotoxicology and contributes to a Structured Research Project on Environmental Biochemistry. She also leads modules and delivers projects for the Level 7 Biochemistry programme.
