| Biography | Katy graduated from the University of Hull in 2003 with a BA (Hons) in Social Policy with Criminology. Whilst working on three funded development projects in the social economy as part of CERT-Ltd, she volunteered as an Appropriate Adult, a Youth Offending Panel member, a Community Press Officer and qualified as a Restorative Conference Facilitator. After meeting a Senior Probation Officer who was studying for a PhD at the University of Hull, Katy took the lead on a research project that explored employment and punishment drawing on information from Humberside Probation Service. From there she trained as a Programmes Facilitator with the Offending Behaviour Programmes Unit (OBPU), working at HMP Wolds, the first private prison to open in the UK. Following promotion to the role of Treatment Manager, Katy trained in programmes including the Thinking Skills Programme (TSP), Controlling Anger and Learning to Manger (CALM) and Cognitive Skills Booster (CSB), focusing on lifers preparing for release. She continued to volunteer, assisting, and then running the Samaritans’ Listener scheme. She left the prison service to work in a Sixth Form college, teaching on Sociology and Criminology while continuing to study for a PhD part-time. Once awarded her PhD she moved to UCNL (University Centre North Lincolnshire) lecturing Criminology to mainly mature students and becoming the Programme Lead for BSc (Hons) Psychology with Criminology in 2021. In July 2022, Katy returned to the University of Hull as a lecturer of Criminology. |
