Project Title ‘Mechanical properties and structure of bovine pericardium’.
Project Description Bioprosthetic heart valves use porcine of bovine tissue for construction of the valve leaflets. Bovine pericardium is a suitable such biomaterial for making these leaflets. Human valve leaflets are anisotropic in their mechanical properties. The challenge for Biomedical engineers is to make bioprosthetic valve leaflets with properties that resemble those of their human counterparts. This PhD describes a full methodology by which anisotropy can be detected, characterized and preserved in bovine pericardium and as such allow the production of biofidelic heart valve leaflets in man-made bioprosthetic valves.
