The ageing population and increasing success of cancer services has resulted in more people living for long periods with and beyond a diagnosis of cancer. Whilst we know that many people living beyond a cancer diagnosis report unmet needs, there is incomplete understanding of the consequences of treatment, holistic requirements of service users and cost effectiveness of aftercare services. This presents a societal challenge as we look to deliver optimal care to maximise the quality of survival whilst working in an environment of austerity. This is an area in which our knowledge has been relatively weak. The national cancer registration service has historically only recorded information regarding the initial cancer diagnosis, forms of treatment offered within the first six months and details regarding the death of the patient. More recently, the Cancer Outcomes Services Dataset (COSD) has begun to mandate the collection of more detailed information regarding the initial diagnosis but also details regarding cancer recurrence. The collection of this data begun in 2013 and will allow long-term outcomes to be analysed in 5 to 10 years.
