Physical Modelling of Mixed Beaches

People Involved

Dr Hannah Williams

Professor Daniel Parsons

Project Description

Mixed beaches are commonly found along the coastline of the UK, these are made up of different sized sediment, ranging over at least two orders of magnitude. When carrying out predictive modelling of this sediment behaviour on mixed beaches, it is not suitable to define a single size parameter. However, in the past this has generally been the approach used, meaning there is a knowledge gap in the response of mixed sediment beaches. Mixed sediment introduces a large number of additional considerations, such as the spatial and temporal distribution of sediment, with different distributions altering the transport characteristics of the sediments, and therefore responding differently to the wave conditions.

The purpose of this preliminary set of experiments is to try and investigate the response of mixed beaches to waves in order to fill some of this existing knowledge gap.
