Does glycated hemoglobin variability in type 2 diabetes differ depending on the diabetes treatment used in the Qatari population: implication on diabetes complication risk

People Involved

Project Description

The purpose of this research is to better understand diabetes control and diabetes complications. It has been shown that fluctuation (changes) in long-term diabetes control may be related to the development of diabetes complications. In order to understand this, the study will look at whether changing diabetes treatment depending on the level of the blood sugar level (< 115mg/dl or <140mg/dl) will have different effects on diabetes control, specifically the HbA1c variability in 2 groups of patients with type 2 diabetes in Qatar.

Patient involvement in this research will last for 2 years to complete (114 weeks) and will encompass 20 visits when a blood sample will be taken and demographic details taken. Fasting blood samples will be taken and baseline 12 month, 24 month tests for nerves, kidney function and other blood markers of heart disease risk will be undertaken.

At the end of this period then anonymised data will be sent for analysis of the HbA1c variability for diabetes control and if this reflects diabetes complications
