Project Description

Following on from the Hedgerows: Mapping the Gap project, this element of work will utilise existing datasets and collect primary data to create methods able to differentiate between natural gaps and access gaps within hedgerows. Three methods are proposed for testing. The first leverages our existing dataset and assumed that artificial gaps are near the corners of fields, where landowners are most likely to use for access. The second involves training a new model to detect gaps from aerial imagery, similarly to how we currently identify hedgerows. Finally, the third combines both methods and will involve a field campaign utilising the Universities’ drone fleet to capture multispectral data from hedgerows in sample sites in the East Riding of Yorkshire and compares these to increasingly coarser resolution data.
