Using computer vision to recover Indigenous presence and knowledge via a genealogy of colonial maps of America
People Involved
Project Description
I propose an exploratory analysis on how we can use machines to extract and compare text from 50 pre-modern colonial maps, to create a genealogy that will help historians quantify and visualise how Indigenous knowledge played an essential role in European cartographic understandings of America. This project shows how we can harness computers to help address historical injustices, including the invisibility of Indigenous knowledge and their contributions to humanity’s cultural heritage.
