Co-developing and piloting a whole-ward music therapy intervention to reduce agitation and related physical assaults on inpatient psychiatric wards for people with dementia: The MELODIC Study (Music therapy Embedded in the Life Of Dementia Inpatient Care)

People Involved

Dr Emma Wolverson

Project Description

Psychiatric inpatient wards for people living with dementia (PwD) provide specialist support for the most unwell PwD under the care of the local NHS mental health trust. The main reasons for admission are the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, including agitation and depression. Wards report high levels of physical assaults and frequent use of medication to calm agitation. In stage 1 of the MELODIC (Music therapy Embedded in the Life Of Dementia Inpatient Care) project we will co-design a music therapy intervention manual with key stakeholders to reduce symptoms of agitation experienced by patients on NHS psychiatric wards for PwD. We will pilot the intervention on two wards, one with music therapy and one with no experience of music therapy. We propose an 18-month research project, with the University of Cambridge and the Cambridge and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, to achieve these aims.
