HEIF: HUMBER Science Festival 2.0 - Post Covid Phase 2

People Involved

Project Description

The aim of this project is to expand the Hull Science Festival to cover the Humber region, and create the foundations for a self-sustained science festival for the region, ultimately through formation of a spin-out charity to deliver future Humber Science Festivals. The resulting organisation will highlight STEM throughout the region, deliver public facing science themed cultural activities and support corporate social responsibility agendas of local industry.
Between 2014 and 2018 the University of Hull delivered a Science Festival to the city. This culminated in a highly successful joint British Science Festival and Hull Science Festival in September 2018 (this saw 18,000 people take part in 150+ events over 6 days). Following the COVID enforced hiatus we are now relaunching the Hull Science
Festival in September 2022.
Previous science festivals in Hull have focused on the University’s activities and objectives. A future Humber Science Festival charity (HSF2.0) will aim to be an umbrella organisation which creates and delivers a regional STEM outreach strategy with a remit to inspire, enthuse, entertain, and inform.
In 2018 the University partnered with Siemens Gamesa, RB, Green Port Hull, The Deep, Hull City Council and Yakult to deliver a joint British Science Festival and Hull Science Festivals. Phase 1 of the HSF2.0 bind (funded via HEIF in 21/22) created a short term post to re-establish these relationships, form new links with regional stakeholders, ascertain the extent of regional interest in contributing (in kind and/or in cash) to future Humber Science festivals and put plans in place to deliver a HSF in Sept 22. These plans are on track, and will re-awaken the HSF and awareness of the event.
The current bid represents phase 2 of the project. This will fund a full-time project manager with the remit to create a self-sustaining regionally funded charity to deliver future HSFs and other STEM outreach activities.
