Postgraduate conversion courses in AI and Data Science

People Involved

Project Description

The aim of the project is to develop and deliver a self-sustaining conversion MSc programme in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, initially over 3 cohorts but with a view to long term sustainability. The programme will be designed to help address the shortage of AI and data specialists across the UK and in the Humber Region and provide effective digital and data science skills training to ensure that graduates are prepared for employment in data science and AI, and for and future technological challenges. The programme will be designed around the use and implementation and application of AI and data science technologies and workflows in industry contexts and will be designed to be accessible to students with a wide variety of non-computational backgrounds. We will recruit learners from across STEM disciplines and beyond, as well as those returning to study after a period of employment and looking to upskill. The programme will consist of a series of bespoke taught modules together with an academic dissertation project or industrial placement/internship where students apply their knowledge to real-world problems, using data science and AI solutions. Employer engagement is core to the programme as evidenced by the supporting letters from our project partners. Employers will provide support through the delivery of project opportunities, contributions to the design of the programme, and the formation of an advisory group, to ensure that graduate skills are aligned to the needs of potential employers and addressing the skills gap problem in the Humber region.

A diverse cohort brings with it a wealth and diversity of knowledge, and these experiences will be used to enhance the learning experiences of the cohort. Students will be encouraged to bring their professional and learning experiences (which include formal undergraduate qualifications and experiences developed in the workplace) to their degree, and to work with students of differing experiences to maximise the benefits of the programme and enhance the sense of community and belonging. Dissertation projects will be supported by the Project Partners and by Faculties and Departments across the University to provide a breadth of opportunities for students (such as in biomedical and biological science, environmental sciences, sports science and sports performance, linguistics, business and logistics). Although we have secured support from a range of large local employers, further industry partners will be sought as the project moves to delivery. Such an approach will act to attract learners from a range of backgrounds and upskill them in the context of their existing knowledge and future career aspirations.
