DueCARE: Defining and estimating current and future Unmet palliativE CARE needs in the UK

People Involved

Project Description

What do we want to find out? We want to understand how many people have unmet palliative care needs in the UK, both today and into the future.

Why is this important? As our population ages, the number of people living and dying with serious illness is expected to rise. Assessing the needs of the population is a vital step in service planning.

What will we do? We will hold consultations with patients, family caregivers, service providers and planners. The consultations aim to co-produce a definition of unmet palliative care needs that is both meaningful to patients and their families, and useful to policymakers.
We will estimate how many people in each of the four UK nations have palliative care needs, using national mortality data. Further, using a bereavement survey containing more detailed information, we will measure how many people have unmet needs in the last weeks of life and identify potential inequalities.

How will we communicate the findings? The study is designed for policy impact. We will produce papers, policy summaries, and plain English summaries, disseminating our findings via blogs, newsletters and social media.
