Project Description

The Big Windermere Survey is a Citizen Science project run by the Freshwater Biological Association (FBA) and Lancaster University, which aims to assess the health of England’s largest lake. Volunteers collect water samples from 100 different locations on Windermere and adjacent becks. Samples are currently analysed for nutrients, chemicals and bacteria, to provide a snapshot of the conditions in Windermere. This project aims to collect an additional 20 water samples for environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis. These samples will be sequenced to investigate the levels and distribution of DNA from humans, domestic and wild mammals, waterfowl, and fish, to investigate whether eDNA can provide information on pollution sources in the lake. Pilot data from this study will support grant applications for larger scale, temporal sampling, and sequencing of multiple taxa, including microbes, to provide a comprehensive spatial and temporal insight on lake biodiversity and impacts.
