TRANSECTS: TRANSitions in Energy for Coastal communities over Time and Space

People Involved

Project Description

A bid to the Resilient UK Coastal Communities call (https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/resilient-uk-coastal-communities-and-seas-outline-stage/):

The transition to marine renewable energies, as major contributors to the UK energy mix, should also bolster the sustainability and resilience of coastal communities and seas. To date, such transitions have tended to focus primarily on technological development and economic growth. This has led to adverse effects on society and the environments upon which it relies (human-induced climate change a case in point). This project will take a temporal approach, identifying lessons learned during past energy transitions and exploring how they can be applied to future decision-making. It will focus on the shift from whale oil to oil and gas (1700s to 1800s), and then from oil and gas to marine renewable energies (1900s to 2000s). The project also takes a place-based approach, focusing on local context whilst also examining how transitions occur at a range of geographical scales (micro to macro) and exploring the differences between mainland and island communities. The outcomes of this research will facilitate a more just and equitable, as well as resilient and sustainable, transition to marine renewable energies. This will expedite the development and expansion of the sector. The three case studies are: Orkney, The Firth of Forth and The Humber, and the consortium encompasses marine ecologists, marine geographers, marine archaeologists, marine social scientists and artists. Hull will contribute strength in maritime history/historical geography, plus engagement with the current offshore wind developments and their onshore impacts on communities.
