H-alpha is an emission line that is produced by ionised hydrogen in the interstellar medium. In galaxies, it mostly comes from hot, ionised bubbles around young, massive stars, and as such it is often used to measure how quickly a galaxy is converting its gas into new stars. However, there is also a strong "diffuse" component coming from ionised gas outside these bubbles. In this project, we use hydrodynamic simulations of galaxies that incorporate an advanced non-equilibrium astrochemistry model to study the H-alpha emission and quantify how much of the emission originates from the diffuse component.
